Sponsor: Barbara Horwitz, Interim Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor
Status: On December 1, 2008, Vice Provost Siegel submitted to Interim Provost Barbara Horwitz and Provost Designate Enrique Lavernia a draft IET Administrative Support Needs Assessment. This assessment was conducted in response to a request from the Provost to the Vice Chancellors, Vice Provosts, and University Librarian for a description of the major needs each administrative unit views as the highest priorities for the next several years. According to the Provost’s memo, the primary goal of these assessments is to develop a “comprehensive picture of the opportunities and challenges that we currently face to inform discussion about priorities and to provide a better context for future resource decisions.”
IET’s draft Administrative Support Needs Assessment submittal included the following:
1. A cover letter and an overview of IET areas of strength - Includes a brief summary of IET’s approach to prioritizing strategic investments, an explanation of the needs assessment format and functional categories, and understandings that guided the identification of major administrative support needs and challenges.
2. An at-a-glance priorities framework and a draft IET administrative support needs assessment - Includes an at-a-glance summary of the administrative needs sorted in two ways: (a) by major category, action timeframe, and driving factor (risk or benefit); and (b) by action timeframe and driving factor. The draft IET Administrative Needs Assessment follows the template suggested by the Office of Resource Management and Planning. Continuing the earlier IET approach of organizing by program areas rather than organizational unit boundaries, nineteen program elements have been identified that fall into five functional categories:
- Campus Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery, Emergency Preparedness, and Community Safety
- Campus IT Security
- Campus Administrative Efficiencies
- Core IT Infrastructure in Support of Campus Research, Teaching and Administration
- Core Technologies and Services that Advance Campus Teaching and Research Objectives
The Administrative Support Needs Assessment document supplements the at-a-glance summary, describes very briefly each program element, provides an order-of-magnitude estimate of cost, and identifies associated risks. The last two columns feature key metrics associated with each program element and a brief description of the action needed within a specified timeframe.
