How to prepare Outlook calendar items
This November 4th, a provision in the Energy Policy Act of 2005 that amends the Uniform Time Act of 1966 goes into effect. This provision extends Daylight Saving Time (DST) by approximately four weeks. Beginning this year, clocks in most areas of the United States (including California) will be set back one hour on the first Sunday in November (November 4, 2007). For more information about 2007 Daylight Saving Time changes in the United States, see this website.
Anticipated Effects
The cumulative patches/upgrades provided by Microsoft since the extended Daylight Saving Time (DST) period modification earlier this year will already address the issues of the extended DST.
Mobile Devices
- Windows Mobile: Information on DST 2007 for mobile devices running Windows Mobile software can be found here.
- Blackberry: The Xeda Blackberry services utilizing the campus Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) already have the DST patch pushed to each device centrally and no further action is required. For those departments running their own services for Blackberry, this helpful link will identify the steps required to update the Blackberry services.
- Note: Other mobile devices may require patches and updates to recognize the extended DST time period. Please check with your carrier or device manufacturer.
Microsoft, Apple, etc
- Apple: That's right, the 2007 time zone and Daylight Saving Time rule changes for the United States and most of Canada are already available in Mac OS X 10.4.5 (released February, 2006) or later. However, some additional regions that recently adopted time zone and DST changes are available in the February, 2007 Daylight Saving Time Update, detailed below.
- Microsoft users: If you use Windows Vista or have Automatic Updates turned on, you may not be affected by the change in daylight saving time. If you want to confirm, follow the steps in the Daylight Saving Time Update Guide from Microsoft.
