UC Davis Information & Educational Technology

Firewall Subsidy Program

Sponsor: Peter M. Siegel, Vice Provost for Information and Educational Technology

Status:

  • The Firewall Subsidy application period ended on May 30, 2007.
  • Five units requested and were authorized for reimbursement in early June.
  • See the Reimbursement Distribution and Unit Contacts sheet for the maximum amount available, authorized disbursements and unit contact information.
Rationale:
The UC Davis Cyber-safety Program policy mandates that campus units deploy and maintain both a network (VLAN) firewall and host-based firewall service for network connected computers.  In 2006, campus units reported that funding was the primary hurdle preventing implementation of VLAN firewalls and compliance with the Cyber-safety firewall standard.  The three-year Firewall Subsidy program is designed to help campus units meet this mandate.

Goals:

  • Augment campus units programs implementing VLAN firewalls as part of their efforts to protect local systems, data and other electronic resources.
  • Encourage broader campus usage of VLAN firewalls.
  • Increase compliance with the Cyber-safety Program policy.

Process:

  • IET will make $170,000 available each year for the next three years to subsidize VLAN firewalls. The maximum amount of funding available to each unit is based on campus headcount figures.
  • Costs incurred by campus units for acquiring a VLAN firewall and the first year of support will be reimbursed.
  • Campus units will be responsible for ongoing costs of any VLAN firewall deployed under this program.
  • To participate in the Firewall Subsidy program, campus units must coordinate with their respective college, school or administrative office.
  • The college, school or administrative office will submit an application with up to a three-year plan describing how the subsidy dollars will be used. This plan must reflect a cost-effective VLAN firewall deployment strategy.
  • Applications will be accepted through May 30 and authorized reimbursements will be announced by June 1, 2007.
