Interim VP Prasant Mohapatra
On July 1, 2013, Professor Prasant Mohapatra, past chair of the Department of Computer Science, was appointed interim chief information officer of the Davis campus and vice provost for Information and Educational Technology. Dr. Mohapatra has held the Tim Bucher Family Endowed Chair of Computer Science since 2009. He will serve in the interim campus CIO role until the appointment of a permanent replacement for Peter M. Siegel, who left at the end of June to become vice provost and chief information officer at the University of Southern California.
Dr. Mohapatra has primary responsibilities for research, academic, and administrative computing. As a member of the chancellor’s cabinet at UC Davis, he oversees the Information and Educational Technology (IET) organization and leads the development of a coordinated IT technology strategy across the university, including the Davis and Sacramento (Health System) campuses. During his tenure, Dr Mohapatra continues to build on strong partnerships with faculty and technology leaders in areas such as “big data” academic programs and technology plans, state-of-the-art networks, advanced data center design for managed and collocated research and clinical systems, innovative instructional technologies to support innovative faculty in the classroom and online, and best-of-breed models for administrative services and information security.
Dr. Prasant Mohapatra is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at University of California, Davis. Prior to joining UC Davis, he was on the faculty at Iowa State University and Michigan State University. He has also held Visiting Scientist positions at Intel Corporation, Panasonic Technologies, Institute of Infocomm Research (I2R), Singapore, and National ICT Australia (NICTA). He has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Padova, Italy, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and Yonsei University, South Korea. He has served on the editorial boards of the IEEE Transactions on Computers, IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE Transaction on Parallel and Distributed Systems, ACM WINET, and Ad Hoc Networks. He has been on the program/organizational committees of several international conferences. Effective January of 2014, he will serve as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing.
Dr. Mohapatra received his doctoral degree from Penn State University in 1993, and received an Outstanding Engineering Alumni Award in 2008. He also received an Outstanding Research Faculty Award from the College of Engineering at the University of California, Davis. He is a recipient of the HP Labs Innovation Research Award. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and AAAS.
Dr. Mohapatra's research interests are in the areas of wireless networks, mobile communications, sensor networks, Internet protocols, and QoS. He has published more than 250 papers in reputed conferences and journals on these topics. Dr. Mohapatra's research has been funded through grants from the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, Intel Corporation, Siemens, Panasonic Technologies, Hewlett Packard, Raytheon, Huawei Technologies, and EMC Corporation.
